Why Instant.Lawyer

Instant.Lawyer is a hypersecure platform at the intersection of AI and blockchain, built to augment productivity, automate complex workflows, and improve how decisions are made in the real world. We’re part of a growing ecosystem including Instant.Tax and Instant.Accountants, leveraging reasoning-capable LLMs customized by our team of lawyers, accountants, engineers, and scientists.

Our software combines AI, machine learning, cryptography, and incentive systems into a single architecture designed to operate continuously and reliably. It is researched, built, and tested by a team that understands both the technical and real-world consequences of decision-making systems. With strong early traction and growing demand, we are scaling deliberately and hiring people who want to build infrastructure that matters.

Here's why Instant.Lawyer needs you:

We are working on a simple idea with significant implications. Technology should improve life for people, families, businesses, and communities. Not occasionally, but continuously. That standard starts with the team. We invest in our people so they can build systems the world can depend on.

  • We are building safe, interoperable, decentralized AI systems designed to operate across domains, environments, and real-world constraints;

  • We have strong product-market fit and are working with leading organisations across AI, finance, and legal services;

  • We are backed by global investors who understand the scale of what is being built and support long-term execution;

  • World-Class Team: We’re hiring the best talent from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google,  Stripe, Tesla, and more, blending expertise across engineering, law, and design.

  • Partnerships:Our engineers and researchers collaborate directly with leading model providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and Meta LLaMA.

  • We offer packages that are "North of Fair" to attract and retain world-class talent to work alongside each other.

Role Overview

As an Applied LLM Engineer, you will be at the forefront of advancing how legal reasoning is automated and delivered through large language models. You’ll take on the challenge of adapting state-of-the-art LLMs to high-stakes, real-world legal and professional use cases—where accuracy, trust, and security are paramount.

You will work across the full lifecycle of model application: fine-tuning and customizing foundation models, building retrieval-augmented pipelines, aligning model outputs with legal reasoning standards, and shipping reliable features into production.

This is an opportunity to combine cutting-edge machine learning research with hands-on engineering, directly shaping how millions of people engage with the law.

What You'll Do
  • Design, fine-tune, and evaluate LLMs for applied legal, tax, and professional reasoning tasks.

  • Build robust pipelines that integrate LLMs with structured data, retrieval systems, and domain-specific knowledge.

  • Collaborate with legal and engineering experts to align AI outputs with regulatory and ethical standards.

  • Develop metrics, benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks to measure model performance, reliability, and bias.

  • Contribute production-quality code and APIs to deliver LLM-powered features at scale.

  • Stay ahead of the curve in LLM research, applying the latest techniques in fine-tuning, prompting, RAG, and multi-agent systems

What You Have

  • 3+ years of experience in applied machine learning, with a focus on NLP or LLMs.

  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.

  • Hands-on experience training, fine-tuning, or deploying large-scale models in production.

  • Knowledge of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, and prompt engineering.

  • Familiarity with evaluation methods for LLMs, including accuracy, reliability, fairness, and bias metrics.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with lawyers, product teams, and engineers.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Bonus Points

  • Experience working with legal, financial, or other highly regulated data domains.

  • Contributions to open-source LLM projects, benchmarks, or tools.

  • Familiarity with distributed systems and large-scale training infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of alignment techniques (RLHF, Constitutional AI, preference modeling).

  • Hands-on experience with multi-modal LLMs (text + code, or text + structured data).

  • Research background with published work in NLP, ML, or AI conferences/journals.

Compensation Range

$250,000 - $300,000 USD
